If there were not already enough reasons to prioritize your toddler’s sleep – here is one more!
Yesterday the results were published from a large population-based longitudinal study conducted in September 2014 at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health based on 8 years of data collected from a total of 32,662 pairs of mothers and children. According to the report published in JAMA Pediatrics, “early sleep problems predict later development of emotional and behavioral problems.”
In the study, a child’s sleep and emotional and behavioral development was examined at 18 months of age and again at 5 years of age. As explained in this Huffington Post article, “toddlers who slept less than 13 hours per night often also had emotional or behavioral problems at the same age, the authors write in JAMA Pediatrics.” They further explain that “toddlers who slept less than 10 hours a night or woke frequently at night tended to have more emotional and behavioral problems at age five.”
We have always known the impact that sleep has on physical health and development, but this study further proves what we have always believed – that sleep is also key to a child’s emotional development. So what can you do to make sure that you 18 month old (or your child at any age) is getting the sleep he needs now for his current development and to set him up for future success? Know how much sleep he needs (click here for our handy chart) and ensure a solid foundation is in place for him to get that sleep.
