Dads are pretty great. There is no denying that! They have lots of strengths, but buying gifts typically isn’t one of them. (I mean, my husband can’t be the only one who tries to pass off a new doorbell with video capabilities as a Mother’s Day gift for someone who clearly had her eye and heart on something else? Like say, a luxurious nap?) I say this Father’s Day we take a page out of their book! Let’s get dad a gift he will love, but which also conveniently supports exactly what you’ve been asking for.
Phillips Hue is a smart lighting system that allows you to control the lighting in your home with your phone, voice, and other super cool tech gadgets that guys drool over.
Hello! With the Phillips Huesystem Dad can control lighting of your house with his phone, voice, or a cool gadget! Not only can he turn them on and off, but he can choose from over 16 million shades and colors to perfectly set the mood. With the GPS capabilities of any smartphone, he can set the lights to turn on as he is getting home or turn off as he leaves. (Yes, they’re lightbulbs that save money! Isn’t that every man’s love language?) There is so much more that he can do with these high-tech lights, it’s ridiculous! Mr. Well Rested Baby would be more than happy to tell you aaaalllll about them.
How can these magical lightbulbs improve sleep?
You can set daily routines with the Phillips Huesystem! What? Yep! Dear old dad (or you, because as we all know, women can do anything…especially moms) can set lights to automatically dim in the evening hours to set the tone for sleep and promote melatonin production.
The Phillips Hue lighting system is, hands down, better than any of the best “ok to wake”-clocks on the market.
- The darker, the better for healthy sleep, right? Then why are we putting lights in our kiddos’ rooms with the goal to help them sleep better? Unlike top “ok to wake” clocks, the Phillips Hue system doesn’t have a light to indicate “sleep.” Sleep is simply indicated by darkness, which as we know, promotes sleep.
- You can use the daily routine feature to set your child’s light to turn on at your set “ok to wake”- time. Bonus: the dimming feature allows your child’s light to slowly illuminate over 10, 20, or 30 minutes to communicate when it’s best to start your day.
- The Phillips Hue app allows you to control your child’s lights from your phone. Sure, I’ve already mentioned this, but that means if your little one is still sleeping through the set “ok to wake”-time, you can prevent the lights from turning on at all! Your child can keep sleeping without any disruption.
Picture this, he has the guys over to watch the big game when he pulls out his phone to really blow them away by the quality (and volume) of the sound of his new Sonosspeakers. You know, because it’s not enough to see the guy fumble the ball, you have to actually hear the ball hit the ground!
These smart speakers aren’t just for sports. They can be used for sleep too! That same sound quality that provides you with ball-dropping audibility can crank out white noise too. Quality sound machines are not cheap. At the very least, they are more than you think you would have to pay for something that “only” makes noise. A Sonosspeaker is an investment, but at least you can play some calming bedtime tunes or even listen to an audio bedtime story before bed too!
Through the “alarm” function you can set your Sonos speakers to turn white noise on at a preset time and/or allow your little one to wake up to their favorite tunes! Don’t worry, like the Philips Hue, you can control your Sonos speakers from your phone so if your child is still snoozing, the white noise can stay on and the songs can stay off.
Sonos speakers are super portable! If you’re spending the night somewhere and that place has WiFi, you’re all set to set the mood for a dance party or sleep.
Amazon’s Echo Dot(aka Alexa) is a virtual assistant that can help you build shopping lists, remind you of anything you need reminded of (“Alexa, remind me that June 16this Father’s Day!”), play music, answer questions, tell jokes, make animal sounds, fill you in on the news and weather, and much.
See above. It. Does. Everything.
The Echo Dot is a great communication tool! (Like I said, it does everything!) Do you have a slightly older child who doesn’t require a monitor, but you’re not exactly eager to have show up at your bedside to jar you awake with a request or my personal favorite, holler from their bed waking the entire house? Enter the Echo Dot. If you have an Echo Dotor Alexa-compatible device in your child’s room and one at your bedside, you can program your virtual friend to allow for direct communication. All your kiddo has to say is, “Alexa, call Daddy,” and your husband has a peaceful, non-terrifying way of knowing he is needed in the middle of the night.
*Sleep training tip: Be sure to set boundaries with your Echo Dot. You don’t want to find yourself playing jack-in-the-box with your bed all night, every night.
Happy Father’s Day, Dad! Happy sleeping, Mom!
